Synopsis

Face detection and recognition is an integral part of our daily lives and has attracted a lot of attention recently. With advances in computing power we are now able to use sophisticated mathematical models to not only detect faces in random images but to accurately recognize them against known data. This has has drawn facial recognition into the spotlight with companies and governments to vying to find ways of implementing these features to gain benefit from them. This ranges from convenience access to security implementations. In this project we will investigate the application of Local Binary Patterns as a feature descriptor and the use of Support Vector Machines as an appropriate classifier for them.
